Facts about chain pulling in Train:
When a passenger can pull chain?
Passengers can pull chain in emergency situations like fire in the train, any passenger drops from the moving train, medical emergencies, robbery etc.
What will happen after pulling the chain?
The alarm chains are connected to the main brake pipe of the train which maintains constant air pressure and helps the train to move smoothly. When the chain is pulled, the air escapes from the brake pipe through a small vent. The train becomes slow down as air pressure decreases. The loco pilot quickly notices this decrease in air pressure and stops the train. So, a train cannot be standstill after pulling the chain as this may lead to derailment.
For instance, a train running at a speed of 110 km/hr may stop after 3-4 minutes of the chain being pulled.
Is there any punishment, if anyone pull chain without any valid reason?
Chain pulling without any valid reason is a punishable offence under section 141 of Indian Railways Act. the accused person will be punishable with one year imprisonment or with a fine that may extend to INR 1000 or with both. In case of first offence, the punishment shall not be less than INR 500. In case of second or subsequent offences, the punishment is three months imprisonment.
