Is it mandatory to file Income Tax Return, if you have PAN card ?

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is an unique identification code for Individuals, HUFs, and Corporates, especially who pays Income Tax. But, nowadays PAN card is treated as an Identity Proof. PAN card is also treated as an important document to do any financial transaction in present days. Even you may face problem to open a Bank account if you does not have PAN card.

A. Section 139A of Income Tax Act,1961 deals with PAN.

Q. Is it mandatory to file Income Tax Return if anyone have PAN card ?

A. It is not mandatory to file ITR if Annual Total Income is below threshold limit (2.5 lakh for non senior citizens and 3 lakh for senior citizens).

It means PAN card does not mandates to file ITR if total income is below threshold limit, but it is mandatory to have a PAN card to file ITR. 


Q. Is there any benefit to file a nil return ?

A. Filing Income Tax Return even if your annual total income is below threshold limit can give you a lot of benefits, such as,

• ITR can be used as an Income Proof.
• ITR is an important document to take loans from banks (generally bank seeks last 3 years ITR)
• ITR can be used as a proof when you apply for Visa or Passport.

Also, filing of ITR does not makes any harm, but an ITR can be used as an important document in many purposes.
