Types of Leaves in Companies

For many companies, leave policy includes the paid leave days of employees and national holidays.One of the questions appears in most of the candidate's mind is about the company's leave policy,that the company has provided.This leaves are for different needs and emergency situations.It helps not only to maintain a proper work-life balance but also to ensure health and happiness of the people.

 

In this article we will discuss some various types of leaves of government and non-government or private organization.

 1) Casual leave(CL): This type of leave is taken by an employee for vacation,family events,travel and rest.Such leaves are provided to attend any urgent or unforeseen personal requirements.This leave can ordinarily be taken with prior information to the employer except in cases when informing the employer is not possible.Casual leave is granted for short duration.This leave can allow the employee to take part in their life events which makes them feel appreciated in the company.

 

2) Sick leave(SL): They are also known as Medical Leave.Sick leave is a category of leave by which employees can take rest to recover their illness.It is crucial for the employees to care about their health without worrying about losing pay.Generally,an employee is entitled to sick leave only after a stipulated period of employment in a company.The number of leave may permissible vary from organization to organization.As this leaves are prone to misuse,a medical certificate from a registered practitioner may be required to testify the sickness,in case the number of days of leave at once exceed two or three.Sick leave is a mandatory requirement in many countries to ensure the wellbeing of the employee.

 

3) Earned leave(EL):This leave is also known as Privilege leave(PL). This type of leaves are earned by an employee as they work for an organization for a specified number of workdays.An employee can take Eared leave without any salary deductions.Earned leaves are typically used for personal reasons like observe festivals which are not declared holidays ,vacations etc.An  employee must inform to employer in advance about EL.An employee can get his unused Earned Leaves in one calendar year by carried forward to the next year.Even there are limitations of Earned Leaves which are carried forward to the next year.

 

4) Holidays:In this type of leaves no deductions are made from the salary of the employees and these are the leaves that are always paid for.

This types of Holidays in India are described as follows: 

 

a)Weekly Holidays: At the end of the week  generally there are either one or two holidays,depending upon the company's policy.

 

b) Festivals: The exact date of some festivals depend upon the lunar calender.Even there are very few festivals like Christmas,which fall on the same date on every year.Different regional and religious festivals are granted as holidays in India.Depending upon the company it depends that the number of festivals will account as paid leave.

 

c)National Holidays: Such leaves must be observed by every institution e.g. schools ,banks,governmental offices and even the private companies.This type of holidays include Independence day,Labor day,Memorial days, bank holidays and any nationally-recognized day like death of a well knowed leader of country.

 

5)Maternity Leave(ML): Maternity Leave is important part for new mothers to take care their newborn and recovering from the delivery.The reason of such leave is, not to worry about work while they are busy with their newborns.The duration of Maternity Leave is generally from 7 to 17 weeks depending upon the country where company belongs.Actually 14 week is a ideal period of time to take care of the newborn.No deductions can be made from the leave account of female employee.Due to the case of miscarriage or abortion this leaves can be taken but the leave limit is shorter for such cases.

 

6)Sabbatical Leave or Study Leave(SL): An employee can pursue this type of leave to increase their knowledge and experience in greater way when they rejoin to the organization.This leaves are mainly taken by employees in educational institutions where professors may take break to their teaching role to do research on their project.Sabbatical Leaves have long period of time compared to other leaves. 

 

7)Half Pay Leave: Matching with the name an employee can get half day's salary during such leaves.This type of leaves are applicable only for government servants and an employee can take this leave after completion of one year of service in the company.Employees will enjoy all the above benefits when they move to online payroll.

 

8)Quarantine Leave: This type of leave is granted if there is an infectious disease in the family or the household of the employee that can be risky for health of other people of the company.
