Register and update Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) for GST & Cost of DSC

In GST registration Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is mandatory for Companies and LLPs. All other entities can either use DSC, E-sign or EVC to digitally sign documents in GST portal.







What is Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) ?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic document that is used to authenticate any document in internet instead of one's physical (manual) signature. In India DSC are issues by authorized certifying authorities (CA's).

GST portal accepts only PAN based Class II and Class III DSC issued by an Indian certifying authorities.

What is Class II DSC ?

  • Issued for both business or private individuals use. 
  • Confirms that the information provided by a subscriber in the application form does not conflict with the information stored in the well recognized consumer databases.
  • In case of Proprietorship business, Class II DSC is the best option.

What is Class III DSC ?

  • Issued to individuals as well as organizations. 
  • Issued to individuals only on their personal (physical) appearance before the certifying authorities.
  • These are high assurance certificates, primarily intended to e-commerce applications. 


Cost/ Price of Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

 Indian Certifying Authorities provides DSC either 1 year or 2 years. There are several certifying authorities for DSC as I already provided a link above.

 Charges of different authorities are different.

 For an example:

 E-mudhra 
  • Charges Rs. 1710/- for 1 year DSC (class II)  and Rs. 2182/- for 2 year DSC (class II)
  • Charges Rs. 3008/- for 1 year DSC (class III) and Rs. 4188/- for 2 year DSC (class III)
If you have an Aadhaar number registered with moblile no/email id, e-mudhra now giving Rs. 300/- discount on certificate cost. Even you need not to visit their office and whole process will be done in paperless online method.

 *charges given above are including all taxes.

 Above certificate cost details are applicable only for E-mudhra, you may also choose other specified certifying authorities instead of E-mudhra.
How to register and update DSC ?

 You must register your DSC before you can digitally sign any document on GST portal.

Pre-requisties to register DSC 
  • Emsigner. (Emsigner acts as an interface to make the installed DSC available for use in the portal) Click here to download Emsigner for free.
  • DSC dongle.
  • Software of DSC in computer. 
 Follow the steps to register/update DSC is GST portal

  1. Login to the GST Portal.
  2. Click on your username on the top right section of the post-login landing page.
  3. From the dropdown, select My Profile.
  4. In the My Profile landing page, click on the Register/Update DSC link under the Quick Links section.
  5. Attach your DSC dongle and open emSigner utility.
  6. The Register/Update DSC landing page will have a dropdown with the PANs of all the authorised signatories. Select your PAN from the dropdown.
  7. Select the relevant option from the emSigner utility.
  8. Before registering, you will be asked to enter your password to authorize the registration.
  9. Once you enter the correct password, your DSC will be registered on the GST Portal.

Why DSC expires or become invalid ?

DSC expires or become invalid for following reasons
  • Change in DSC holder's personal data.
  • Change in their relationship status with the organization.
  • Expiry of DSC validity.
To avoid this problem you need to update your DSC if any of the above specified reason arises.


Is DSC mandatory for all users registered under GST ?

DSC is mandatory for companies and LLP's. All other entities can either use DSC or E-sign or EVC to digitally sign documents on the GST portal.

To avail E-sign taxpayers must have a valid Aadhaar card and valid mobile no registered with Aadhaar. A OTP will send to the mobile no registered with aadhaar and taxpayer need to e-verify the document with the aadhaar OTP.

 Although a taxpayer may E-verify his GST application with EVC. A OTP will send to his mobile & email which were registered in GST registration form PART-A. He just need to enter the OTP and e-verify the application. Moblie no in aadhaar is not required to avail this service.
